Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water: what's the difference?

They look identical in the vial. One is single-use; the other can be entered for weeks. The difference is a single ingredient — and it changes how you buy, store and use it.

Both are clear, both are water, and both turn up next to lyophilized research compounds — which is exactly why they get confused. But bacteriostatic water and sterile water are built for different jobs, and using the wrong one either wastes product or defeats the point of the vial entirely. Here is the distinction, in plain terms.

The one-line answer

Sterile water is purified water with no preservative, intended for a single use. Bacteriostatic water is the same purified water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added — a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth, so the vial can be entered more than once over a working period.

Bacteriostatic means "stops bacteria from multiplying." It doesn't sterilize what's already there — it holds the line, which is enough to keep a multi-entry vial usable between draws when handled cleanly.

Why benzyl alcohol is the whole story

Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% is the active difference. Once you've broken the seal on a vial of plain sterile water, the clock starts — there's nothing to discourage microbial growth, so best practice is one use and discard. Add benzyl alcohol and the solution resists that growth between entries, which is what makes a 30 mL vial practical when you're reconstituting a compound you'll draw from more than once.

That same ingredient is also a limitation. Benzyl alcohol isn't appropriate for every use case, and some applications specifically call for a preservative-free diluent. Match the water to the protocol, not the other way around.

When sterile water is the right call

Choose preservative-free sterile water when the protocol requires no additives, when you're working in very small single volumes, or when the material you're reconstituting isn't compatible with benzyl alcohol. It's the cleaner slate — at the cost of no reuse.

When bacteriostatic water is the right call

Choose bacteriostatic water when the same reconstituted vial will be entered across multiple sessions and benzyl alcohol is acceptable for the work. The preservative buys you the working window that makes a multi-use vial worthwhile.

Buying either one: what actually matters

Regardless of which you need, the questions are the same. Was it sterile-filtered? Is the glass Type I borosilicate that won't leach? And — the one most sellers skip — can you see a certificate of analysis tied to the exact lot you're buying? A published COA for your lot number tells you the sterility, endotoxin, benzyl alcohol concentration and pH of the batch in your hand, not a generic spec sheet. If a seller can't show you that, you're trusting a label.
